Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine

Course Code HLT60102

What is Western Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine is a traditional system of medicine that utilises the natural healing properties of plants. It is widely used today across many cultures, with 80% of the global population choosing herbal treatments. Western Herbal Medicine, like all "naturopathic" approaches, is holistic - practitioners treat underlying causes and contributing factors of illness, not just symptoms, and recognise the ability of the body to heal itself.

What will you learn?

The course provides an in-depth foundation of herbal study incorporating research-based evidence and centuries-old traditional knowledge from around the world. Botany, herb cultivation and manufacturing, and the therapeutic application of herbal medicines for disease prevention and health maintenance are included in the curriculum. Students also study health science (such as anatomy, physiology, pathology and biochemistry), basic nutrition and naturopathic health assessment methods. Here is a complete list of modules and module descriptions for further information.

Students undertake supervised clinical studies in the college clinic in years two and three of their course. This provides a vital opportunity to learn how to treat and manage actual clients and cases prior to graduation and commencement of practice.

First aid

Students must obtain a current Senior First Aid Certificate prior to graduation.

Time to complete

A full-time student can complete the advanced diploma in three years. Part-time students will take longer to complete the award. This is dependant on the student's desired study load.
